Local Perth burlesque artist Fifi Fontaine is a head above the rest
The Skull Stylist is a busy lady!
She’s sponsoring Perth International Burlesque Festival for a second year, and many Perth locals will be relishing the opportunity to wear, view, purchase and even perform in her creations. Read her interview from 2019.
No costume is complete without a good headpiece – and her talents are evidenced on the heads of Bettie Bombshell (Miss Burlesque Australia 2019, PIBF 2020 Headliner), Scarlet Adams (Miss Burlesque Australia 2019), Agatha Frisky (Miss Burlesque Western Australia 2013) and Lyra la Belle (Director of Hot Sauce Burlesque).
A series of her custom-made headpieces will be worn on the head of the fabulous Festival Director, the Sugar Duchess – which will match her three couture creations from Chein Noir Designs. You will also see some pieces created for performers and rovers of the festival.
For those who don’t have their outfits sorted, there is still time to think about headwear or a headpiece!
We asked Skull Stylist for a few tips for styling our heads:
Q: Tell me a little bit about your creative process when starting a piece…
Skull Stylist: I am a self-taught milliner with a passion for creating unique and beautiful products. I like to understand the ins and outs of what my client’s needs are.
For example, if it is a piece for performance, will you be keeping the piece on or does it need to be removable? Do your other costume pieces need to be taken into consideration? As I start to put the pieces of the puzzle together, I can visualise what I am going to create in my head.
I share material options and descriptions with my clients so they are a part of the process and also start to visualise my creative brain wave.
Q: What’s your best advice for matching a headpiece with an outfit or costume?
Skull Stylist: When matching a headpiece to an outfit, don’t get too hung up on it matching perfectly. Having a different shade of colour creates depth and interest to your ensemble.
Q: If you could design a dream headpiece to wear to match the themes of any of our events what would you pick and why?
Skull Stylist: Avant Garde baby! Let’s get out of that box and let those creative juices flow.
